Day 12: The New Routine

Michael has been working a string of overnight shifts. This quickly led to a wonderful new routine for he and James. Michael naps before a shift, and then heads to the NICU to see James. Eleven o'clock at night is a nice quiet time for the nurses, and they are always more than ready to help a dad in need. James and Michael then get a nice 20-30 minute visit and a rock. Spending the time with James before going in to the emergency department for a Memorial Day weekend overnight shift was grounding and peaceful, and really set the tone for some nice shifts.

James' bilirubin has come back down under the lights, and they have been backed off from double phototherapy to single. Also, he has a new trick, which is to bring his leg way up in the air, as though to wave. Nurse Betsy is certain he will be the first baby to roll over before his due date!

Auntie B has been with us since Friday. She and Patrick have been having a famous time, playing and shopping and generally carousing about. She stepped right in and took over, regardless of situation, and both Robin and Michael were able to relax just a little bit more.

Since Michael has been working overnights, the mornings meant bagels for the family. Patrick would great Michael with a big smile and a "BAGELS!" when he came through the door. Then he'd say, "Thank you Daddy." Michael would also come home with a James report, as he would stop at the NICU after the shift and on the way to the bagel store.
