Day 19: Off the IV

As James' milk feeds have been steadily increasing, his amount of IV nutrition has been steadily decreasing. Today he was up to 20 ml milk per feed and for the first time needed no IV supplement!

It won't be all breastmilk going forward, however. Starting today, his feeds will be alternating between milk and a high-protein preemie formula. Although breastmilk is important, it just doesn't provide everything needed for optimal preemie growth. The formula is higher in calories, and provides extra protein, calcium, and other nutrients essential for growth and brain development.
